Thank you Moody Gardens for partnering with me on this travel adventure.
This past Friday Ethan turned 5 and instead of a party we decided to make it a fun weekend getaway to his favorite place, Moody Gardens. We made a full weekend of it and stayed at the beautiful recently renovated Moody Gardens hotel and had a great time enjoying one of the best Galveston attractions for families.
Moody Gardens is all about customer service and making sure guests are happy. I told the front desk that it was Ethan’s birthday and asked if they could do something special in the room for him. We arrived to super hero balloons and cupcakes. I didn’t think it was possible for him to be happier to be at Moody Gardens! A great reminder of why Moody Gardens is one of our favorite places.
We have been to Moody Gardens several times because it’s such a great family getaway and one of the best Galveston attractions on the island. It is within driving distance and even close enough for a day trip from the Houston area. If you’re visiting Texas, there is so much to do in the Galveston area including Moody Gardens I highly recommend you check it out. Moody Gardens is so packed with activities that it’s hard to get it all in during one weekend but these were our highlights from Ethan’s birthday stay and great ones to try on your next visit.
1. The Ropes Course & Sky Tykes
Challenge your agility, balance and strength as you encounter the five-tier Sky Trail® Ropes Course, the tallest Steel Ropes Course on the Gulf Coast! Ranging from Criss-Cross Tight Ropes to Burma Buckets, the 81-foot Ropes Course is filled with 48 fascinating obstacles suitable for the whole family to enjoy. While we were there my niece and nephew both 15 did the zip line and gave it a thumbs up.
Children between the ages of 2 through 7 can even take on an adventure of a smaller scale on the Sky Tykes™ Ropes Course that is appropriate for those who are 48 inches and under. As much as Ethan thinks he’s big enough to to the big Sky course, he’s not. Haha! But they both had a great time on the Tykes course!
2. The Rain Forest Pyramid
Enjoy a rare, up-close and interactive experience with endangered plants and animals ranging from Giant Amazon River Otters to Saki Monkeys and Chinese Alligators. See it all in one of the truest replicas of a real rainforest.
The climate is that of a real rainforest so be prepared for heat and humidity but there is no comparison for the up close experience with the animals and the beautiful plants and butterflies. So many of the plants and flowers were in bloom on our visit this past weekend and it was alive with color. One of the monkeys was out with a trainer which the kids loved. What makes me happy is that they are having a great time but they are also learning with all of the interactive exhibits!
3. The Aquarium
Dive into the oceans of the world in a 1.5-million-gallon aquarium teeming with creatures from tuxedo-clad penguins to seals, stingrays, sharks and more. Ethan has come on board with the rainforest pyramid and now loves it just as much as the aquarium but for the longest time after his first visit at 2 where he kept shouting “Fish! Fish!” the ocean life was his favorite. We have been to quite a few aquariums in our travels and Moody Gardens is a very nice one with a wonderful multi level sea lion exhibit, a walk under shark tank arch and lots of fascinating smaller exhibits like the Lion Fish one above.
4. The Colonel
Live the high-life on an hour-longcruise aboard a replica of an 1800’s paddlewheel boat. As a Southern girl I have always wanted to ride on a paddle wheel and despite our many trips to Moody Gardens we had not ridden on the Colonel yet. (As I mentioned there is a ton to do and we always miss something!) This weekend we took our first ride and both the kids and the grown ups loved it! It was a lovely breeze and it was nice to watch the other boats and jet skis in the water. The cruise is just the right length that the kids didn’t get antsy and it didn’t interfere with do any other activities.
